Akanul- Homeland to Avandra-Shar
This land is characterized by crazed stone spires, cavernous ravines and cliffs like petrified waves. Free floating earthmotes host miniature forests, grasslands, and lakes. Ever-replenishing waterfalls flow from watermotes to drape the land below in curtains of mist. The wild landscape seems perfectly suited to the tempestuous genasi who claim the land as their own. They breed several varieties of drakes to assist them in trade, transport, and war. The shattered ruins of Chondathan cities lie broken at the bottom of ravines or thrust high atop stone buttes, a constant draw to adventurers seeking troves of lost gold. Predators native to Abeir hunt shadowed lowlands, while ravenous abolethic horrors stalk the cloud-girdled northern skies, pursuing their own inscrutable plans.
A portion of Toril’s sibling world Abeir violently exchanged places with western Chessenta during the Spellplague. Prior to the merger, this Abeiran land was populated predominantly by genasi in the realm of Shyr. Genasi suffered under the brutal rule of a primordial name Karshimis. When the Spellplague struck, only a portion of shyr was transferred. Those lucky enough to have been transported rejoiced upon discovering that their overlord’s citadel of burning ice had not made the trip with them, and set about creating a realm of their own.
Akanul survived its first contact with the Abolethic (aquatic species that is evil) Sovereignty roughly fifty years ago. During that conflict, the genasi’s first city of Brassune was destroyed and depoplulated by unfettered kraken. Survivors fled the northernmost portion of the kingdom, which remains abandoned. The current capital city of Airspur was constructed miles to the southeast, from the bones of a lost Chandathan city of the same name.
Akanul is allied with High Imaskar and Aglarond, and is currently on good terms with Chessenta despite the rivalry between that land and High Imaskar. Netheril too has an embassy in Airspur. This Shadovar toehold has soured relations with the kingdom of Cormyr. Akanul has no direct ties with Calimshan, viewing the slave-owning genasi of that realm as decadent and morally bankrupt. Akanul and and Tymanther still hold long standing grudges, and the two have occasionally skirmished in the blasted land of Chessenta’s southern marches. [Dragonborn are still shunned from the Firestorm Cabal Safe House (on the outskirts of Brassune) no matter if they pledged loyalty to the Firestorm Cabal.]
Akanul is noted for its awe-inspiring vistas and the dangers that gird its borders and lowlands. Airspur’s infrastructure, shops, and dwellings are incorporated into Akanul’s wondrous landscape of elemental spires and earthmotes. In the three-dimensional city, upper spires do not necessarily have a foundation on solid land. The city is patrolled by genasi riding well-trained war drakes. Being a genasi in the city means never having to worry about falling on hard times. The queen sees to the basic needs of all refugees from Shyr and their direct descendants. Akanul is ruled by Queen Arathane in partnership with the four Stewards of Earth, Fire, Sea, and Sky. Arathane is considered a good and just ruler. Her throne is high atop a twisted spire above Airspur where each of the four Stewards holds his or her own tiny “thronemote.” There, the lords decide the fate of the kingdom. Each of the four Stewards has specialized responsibilities. Tradrem Kethtrod, Steward of the Earth, heads up a body of secret informers and spies within and especially beyond Akanul’s borders. Magnol, Steward of Fire, cares only about Akanul’s defense against any and all enemies; Akanul’s armies ultimately answer to him. Myxofin, Steward of the Sea, oversees the business of the realm as the Lord of Coin. Lehaya, Steward of the Sky, is also called the Lawgiver because she is charged with administering the laws of Akanul. All give their allegiance to the queen, but if they together disagree with their monarch-by her late mother’s own decree- she must abide by their wishes.
Avandra-shar begins her journey into this story being on one of her own self-discovery and self-envisioned missions. She desires to become part of a body of travelers who are headed to Chessenta; she hopes to surprise her father by her determination and sheer will to express to him that she can make it as an adventurer, rather than some dog of the government. She tends to dislike her father’s recent involvement in government and politics because of the relations with Tymanther and Calimshan. She doesn’t understand the need to have such enemies or rivalries.
Ava is a very passionate and free-spirited twenty-five year old Stormsoul/Watersoul Genasi. She will strike back against those who would attempt to rob her of her freedom and she urges others to fight for their own liberty. She often attempts to take fate into her own hands; however, she finds herself following after those who take leadership naturally. She is loyal to her friends and finds it easy to be a defender for those whom she sees worthy of her protection.
Ava does typically place others’ needs above her own; often meaning she will put herself in harm’s way to help protect her people (whether Genasi or friends). She will follow rules and respect authority if she believes them to be worth it. She is perceived as relaxed in social interactions, enthusiastic in most situations and often skeptical of others. Although she seeks her own freedom from the dutiful life of propriety, she is loyal to those whom she believes serve a common goal or purpose. Ava is adaptable (hence her multi-manifestation feat) when facing tough choices in her adventures. In dire situations, Ava is one to cautiously approach situations and is impassioned to move forward if setbacks occur; although, she can be impulsive at times.
Due to her Genasi characteristics she often says things like, “I’m so mad, I’m about to boil!” She is ever changing moods and her bodily features often throw friends off because she looks like an entirely different person and often acts accordingly. She often changes her manifestation as a method of expressing her mood or intentions. As a watersoul genasi, she has sea-foam green skin and bright blue energy lines dispersed as vessels which carry her life blood. She is bald with blue energy lines glowing on the head. The watersoul manifestation is often what she displays when calm or playing a straight defensive/tactical mood. These energy lines are like a human fingerprint, unique to her without a copy. As a stormsoul genasi, Ava takes a new form. She has purple skin; silvery energy lines; and glowing crystalline silver spikes on the head. She often displays this manifestation when she feels threatened or troubled. Her leather armor leaves portions of her body uncovered to show off her energy lines. She is 5’7”, 130lbs, and a broader physique as evidence of her physical strength.
Personal History and Deity
Avandra-shar’s grandparents were among those lucky enough to have been transferred during the Spellplague. Her parents met amongst the ruins of Brassune shortly before their families fled to Airspur. Her father assisted in the construction of Airspur with his ability to ally the guard drakes of the area. You see, like many Genasi of the area, he has more than one elemental manifestation. His abilities are known amongst the lords of the land because this involvement and dedication to the city of Airspur.
Her father is subject to Myxofin, the Steward of the Sea. He is looked upon with favor due to his ability to bring in business and trades from many different nations within Toril. Avandra-shar, often nicknamed Ava, is often looked upon with favor by Arathane due to her father’s loyalty in the high courts. Ava has many times been privileged to information about the goings on in Airspur that has given her a higher degree of responsibility.
Akanul regularly sends foresters into the lush land of Chondalwood. Ava has been called upon by Tradrem Kethtrod to spy in the lowland areas. Due to her multiple manifestation abilities, she has been able to provide needed information regarding possible uprisings of the lowland creatures. She has been trained on the war drakes in secret with the sons of Tradrem.
Avandra-shar often travels alone, however has met up with a certain Drow on more than one occasion. He often offers aid in certain circumstances. She has pursued his friendship, as of recent, due to the fact that their travels brought them together with common goal of getting to the Ramai. She is loyal to him as he has protected her in many circumstances. He is not often liked where they travel and she finds it her goal to encourage others to find out his character. She finds his friendship a comfort and one whom she can trust. As a Genasi, she doesn’t have the typical animosity toward other races, offering her friendship to Xanithar without hesitation.
Ava focuses on treating others as her equals. Due to her family heritage, Ava is challenged to be bold and brave, taking risks. She advocates for energetic fun and adventure. Ava enjoys the combined favor of Selune and Tymora, however she is not a devout follower and is often found following her own set of goals without a thought to which deity she may follow. She follows her heart and acts in the moment. The reason she found any need to have chosen a deity in her young life is because she finds their energetic, protective and bold empowerment offers a new outlook on life which isn’t found in the high court’s her father serves in. However, her goal is to find adventure in life and friends that she can devote her services to rather than some aloof deity.
